Jean-Paul Mendy is a southpaw who represented his native country at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was defeated in the first round.

Mendy made his professional debut on December 22, 2000, when he beat countryman Guy Dia-Njoh on knock-out in the second round.

He is undefeated as a pro and has drawn with Anthony Hanshaw.

Mendy fought Sakio Bika on July 31 in Las Vegas, for an IBF #1 spot and a shot at the title. Bika lost the fight by disqualification in the 1st round after he knocked Mendy out with a punch following a knockdown and while Mendy was still on his knees.
