The rivalry between Julio Cesar Chavez and Greg Haugen (32-4-1) started a few years before the fight took place.

Chavez was training in Las Vegas, and Haugen went to one of his sparring sessions. Haugen told Chavez that he was sparring with "young little girls with dresses on and I'd be willing to spar with him for free to help him out." "I've disliked him since that moment," Chavez admitted. Haugen was finally able to get a fight with Chavez after he had worked his way up to the WBC's #2 contender position. In the leadup to the fight, he said of Chavez, "The way I see it sixty of the guys he fought were just Tijuana cab drivers that my mother could have knocked out, but the other twenty-two are good fighters so I'm not taking him light but I'm not taking him as he's unbeatable either with 82-0." And with the fight set for Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, he said there "ain't 130,000 Mexicans who can afford to buy tickets." Chavez was set to defend himself and his people, responding, "I really hate him bad. When he looks at me, I want to vomit. I am going to give him the worst beating of his life; I am going to make him swallow the words that came out of his dirty mouth."

jccNOTE ON ATTENDANCE – The fight took place at Azteca stadium, the second largest stadium in the world. The official attendance reported during the fights was 130,000 though other reports were as high as 136,274. Either way, this fight was to date the largest paid attendance ever for a boxing event. However, many of the tickets sold for a cheap 5,000 pesos, the equivalent then of $1.65. To make sure things didn't get out of hand with the huge crowd there were also about 2,000 police present–whether in regular uniform, riot gear or undercover, and some accompanied by Dobermans or uzis. The soccer field in the center of the stadium was protected by a ten foot wide moat which was lined with barbed wire. (4,000 tickets were given away by Chavez to underprivledged children.)

PURSES – Haugen earned $1,000,000 from this fight. Chavez earned $2,500,000 as well as a deal to for $10,000,000 to fight Terry Norris (which never happened).
