Ortiz to Headline Welterweight Tournament?Written by Dave McKee
Richard Schaefer, matchmaker for Golden Boy Promotions, is expected to announce a welterweight tournament within the next week.
Among the names churning through the rumor mill are recent GBP signee Devon Alexander (22-1, 13 KO), Victor Ortiz (29-3, 22 KO), Lucas Matthysse (28-2, 26 KO), Pauli Malignaggi (29-4, 6 KO), Andre Berto (28-1, 22 KO) and Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO).
Amir Khan's (26-1, 18 KO) name has also been mentioned in connection with the potential tournament, though one suspects he has too little to gain from such a commitment.
The recent successes of Showtime's bantamweight and middleweight tourneys give this proposal some credibility. Add to that the opportunities for extremely interesting match-ups (and rematches) in this group, and the notion of a welterweight tournament begins to sound like a very good idea.
At this time only Ortiz #3 and Berto #2 are ranked in the Ring Magazine top ten, and none of the rumored contestants have a title.
The proposal will apparently be offered to both Showtime and HBO for bidding.
