Enzo Maccarinelli Busted for Banned SubstanceWritten by James E. King III
According to U.K. sources, cruiserweight/light heavyweight Enzo Maccarinelli (35-5, 27 KOs) is the latest big name boxer to have failed a drug test.
The 6'4" (193cm) Maccarinelli, a longtime cruiserweight, recently dropped to light heavyweight hoping to eventually line-up a world title showdown with fellow Welshman and WBO Light Heavyweight Champion Nathan Cleverly. But now, it appears the Swansea fighter will be awaiting a suspension ruling instead.
Ironically, like Antonio Tarver who also tested positive for a banned substance, Maccarinelli is a boxing commentator, lending his services to BoxNation.
Fellow Brits Michael Banbula and Terry Dunstan have also recently failed drugs tests and were handed suspensions as a result.
Enzo Maccarinelli, one of the most respected fighters in British boxing, became the WBO Cruiserweight Champion in 2006 after the interim title he was awarded following his victory over Marcelo Fabian Dominguez was upgraded due to Johnny Nelson's retirement.
After making four successful title defenses, including an impressive points victory over Wayne Braithwaite (then 22-2) in 2007, Enzo was knocked out by David Haye in 2008. Since then he's also been knocked out by notable cruiserweights Denis Lebedev and Ola Afolabi.
The 31 year old Welshman's most recent bout, a unanimous decision win over Shane McPhilbin (then 8-2), was contested at cruiserweight and occured March 23rd at Civic Hall, Wolverhampton, West Midlands, United Kingdom.
It's not yet known which banned substance(s) Enzo Maccarinelli tested positive for.
