Danny Garcia | On the Verge of Super-Stardom?

Written by Mark Weber at Oct 20, 2012 - 09:59AM ET in News
Philadelphia is synonymous with boxing having produced such legends such as Joe Frazier, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Meldrick Taylor, Tim Witherspoon, and Bernard Hopkins.

Perhaps a new name will soon be joining that list - Danny "Swift" Garcia.

In a town already filled with superstars such as Claude Grioux, Ryan Howard, Michael Vick, Lesean Mccoy, and Andrew Bynum, it's going to be a tough road for Garcia to gain the spotlight even in his own city; But if he continues his strong pace, he could possibly surpass them all.

Only 24 years old, Garcia hails from North Philadelphia and already holds two championship belts, the all-important lineal distinction in the Light Welterweight division, and has posted victories over top fighters Erik Morales and Amir Khan.

Danny Garcia rose to prominence when he defeated Morales earlier this year, winning the WBC Light Welterweight title in the process. However, his most celebrated bout to date came in July when he upset Amir Khan via a 4th Round TKO. With the victory, Danny Garcia unified the WBC and WBA Light Welterweight titles, gained status as The RING's (lineal) champion and catapulted himself among boxing's elite.

Trained by his outspoken father and trainer, Angel, Danny Garcia will enter tonight's rematch against future hall of famer Erik Morales (52-8, 36 KO) with a flawless 24-0 record with 15 wins coming via knockout.

Garcia vs Morales II will headline tonight's inaugural boxing event in Brooklyn's newly constructed Barclay's Center.

Young and hungry, Garcia looks to continue his winning ways and carve his name into everybody's pound-for-pound list.

Disappointingly, Erik Morales failed his pre-fight drug test, testing positive for Clenbuterol. However the fight is expected to go on.

The card also features 3 other title fights:

Paul Malignaggi vs Pablo Cesar Cano
WBA Welterweight Championship

Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam vs Peter Quillin
WBO Middleweight Championship

Randall Bailey vs Devon Alexander
IBF Welterweight Championship

Garcia vs Morales 2 is promoted by Golden Boy Productions and all 4 title bouts will be televised on Showtime starting at 8 PM EST.

Does Garcia have what it takes to build into one of boxing's next superstars?

Only time will tell. But at his current pace, however, this could just be the start of his dominance of the incredibly talented 140 pound division.

Many challenges await...
