We are less than 24 hours away from Abner Mares' (26-0-1, 14 KO's) first title defense of his newly won WBC Featherweight Championship belt.
Mares will take on former champion Jhonny Gonzalez (54-8, 46 KO's) at the Stubhub Center in Carson, California.

The event is Saturday night and will be televised on Showtime Boxing, it will also feature WBC Super-Bantamweight champion Victor Terrazas (37-2-1, 21 KO's) against new up and comer Leo Santa Cruz (24-0-1, 14 KO's).

Abner Mares defeated Ponce De Leon by technical knockout in the 9th round to capture his third title in as many divisions (three). He takes on veteran and former two-division champion Jhonny González who seeks to reclaim the championship belt he lost at the hands of Ponce De Leon last September.

The unbeaten Mexican is very familiar with González's skills and fighting style, having once trained and sparred together under great trainer Ignacio "Nacho" Beristan. Mares recently appeared on ESPN's Nacion VIP and told Bernardo Osuna, "Jhonny will be my toughest opponent to date, he is a complete fighter."

Abner is correct in saying González is a complete fighter. He can both box and brawl and, at 31, still possesses the knockout power that earned him the Featherweight championship.

González is a skillful fighter and his aggressive offensive style could challenge Mares in the early rounds. Mares is fighting his second fight as a Featherweight, and though dominant in his bout against Ponce De Leon, he showed a few instances where he felt the sting of Ponce De Leon's punches.

Ultimately the fight will be determined on speed and quickness and this is a disadvantage González won't be able overcome. Mares adapts to his opponents' fighting style, and his level of familiarity with González should give him an insider's edge into producing the victory. Nevertheless, Mares needs to be mindful of González's power and stay away from his uppercut or it could be an unexpected short night for him.

Prediction: Abner Mares wins in the 9th by TKO.
