Canelo Alvarez: Next fight and 2014 plans

Written by
Canelo Alvarez met with Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer today to discuss his future and outline an agenda for 2014.
It was agreed Canelo will have three matches next year and all will be on pay-per-view (PPV).

The bouts are scheduled for the following dates:

March 8
July 26
November 22

No opponents have been decided upon as those details are still being sorted out and are, at least partially, dependent on the outcomes of upcoming bouts.

Miguel Cotto is also scheduled to meet with Richard Schaefer sometime this week and they will also discuss possible opponents, including Canelo Alvarez, Carlos Molina and the Trout-Lara winner.

Technically a free agent, Cotto is working with Top Rank promotions and has voiced his desire to become the first Puerto Rican 4-time division champion.

Although Canelo and Cotto have shown an interest in fighting each other and this match-up is intriguing to fans, Canelo's promotional company, Golden Boy, is closely affiliated with the Showtime cable network while Cotto just fought on HBO.

So while Miguel Cotto is a free agent in a promotional sense, does he have any obligation to HBO? If so, it may kill chances for Cotto vs Canelo in the immediate future.

Several weeks ago, FightSaga reported Miguel Cotto vs lineal middleweight champion Sergio Martinez was looking good for June 7th so that may be an indication of who's next for Miguel. We'll know more after Cotto meets with Golden Boy later this week.

Most fans seemingly want to see Canelo vs Cotto but if that bout doesn't materialize for March 8th, potential opponents for Alvarez on that day are: Alfredo Angulo, Carlos Molina, Victor Ortiz and the winner of the Trout vs Lara (Dec 7).

Carlos Molina or the winner of Trout vs Lara would seem like the next logical step as there would be world title implications both ways.

Canelo's March 8th opponent will be announced in the next several weeks.
