Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez: Prediction and analysis

Written by
Saturday, June 7th, Miguel Angel Cotto (38-4, 31 KOs) will attempt to make Puerto Rican boxing history by competing for his fourth division world title as he takes on lineal Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KOs) in his home away from home, Madison Square Garden in NYC, New York.
The “Hall of Fame” match-up will be broadcast on HBO PPV with a start time of 9PM EST/6PM PST, and a price tag of $55.00 in SD/$65.00 in HD.

In this highly anticipated, “mythical” pairing between the two future “Hall of Famers” should prove to be one of the more entertaining and action filled bouts on the 2014 boxing calendar. Who will be successful in tonight’s main event from the “Mecca of boxing”?

Let’s look at the “Keys to Victory”!!

Keys to Victory

Miguel Cotto - Miguel is a complete fighter and a proven winner. He can cut off the ring extremely well and can box proficiently when he has to. Cotto has shown many different wrinkles to his fight game and has become one of the more versatile fighters in the entire sport. His ability to adapt and overcome adversity in the ring has given the three division world champion “Hall of Fame” credentials.

Cotto likes to work behind his jab, which is surprisingly a punishing shot. His jab resembles many fighters’ straight right hands. Perhaps it’s because he’s a converted southpaw who fights in an orthodox stance, but all of Cotto’s power resides in his left hand. He throws very well in combination and can virtually neutralize his opponent’s power early by digging to the body effectively.

Some would say that Cotto’s best weapon is his left hook to the body and head, but it’s actually his iron resolve and his physical durability. Sergio’s toughest task in the ring will be to try and dissuade Cotto from imposing his will.

Miguel is one of the most confident fighters in boxing and always remains calm during each and every bout. He doesn’t get discouraged easily, even when faced with very adverse conditions.

Cotto is the consummate professional in the ring and always puts forth a machine like effort. It’s going to be much more difficult for Sergio to win this fight than most believe. On paper, the style match-up couldn’t be any worse for Cotto. Maravilla has the advantage in just about every category except for championship experience.

But the intangibles that can’t be measured before a big fight of this nature are always the most important, and Cotto possesses everything that a true champion needs in order to be victorious.

Sergio Martinez - “Maravilla” is a tremendous athlete and a very talented counter puncher. He has fast hands and very good footwork. He also possesses a very high ring IQ and has shown championship level patience and poise in the squared circle.

Before suffering several ailments which consequently lead to his recent inactivity, there was a genuine reason why so many experts listed Martinez as one of the best pound for pound fighters in boxing. No one can question his ability to fight. But can he remain competing at this level at age 39? That’s the question on everyone’s mind.

Sergio is a very crafty fighter who likes to capitalize on his opponent’s mistakes. He likes to play the role of matador and punish his adversaries after he makes them miss. He’s very difficult to hit cleanly, and is a very smart defensive and offensive fighter.

He likes to work off of an effective touch jab to set up the straight left hand. He also likes to follow the left hand with a hard right hook. He can also launch the left uppercut from different angles and is a very accurate puncher.

But his strongest asset is his footwork. It is the foundation for his defense and offense. He likes to pivot around his opponents and fight them at certain angles that make it difficult for his opponents to return fire.

Maravilla has the ability to frustrate his opponents into taking foolish risks in the ring. When they get frustrated and attempt to land something while out of position, he makes them pay with clean, effective counters.

Cotto vs Martinez prediction: If Sergio Martinez is fighting with 100% health, most fight scribes and ringside observers are expecting Maravilla’s size and speed advantages to be too much for the Puerto Rican favorite.

Don’t be surprised if Miguel Cotto makes this action filled scrap much more competitive than most anticipate. The three division world champion is a proven warrior and has garnered his status among the elite for a reason.

Although the scheduled 12 round contest will be much more competitive than most expect, look for Maravilla to get a mid to late rounds stoppage against the always game Caguas native.
