Requesting holds on arenas is fairly common and does not indicate that a fight is official, but it is quite intriguing when you factor in what has developed over the past few weeks.
Last week in a Q&A with fans in England, Mayweather called out Conor to sign the contract for June. He also announced he is coming out of retirement to fight only McGregor.
“For Conor McGregor, I’m coming out of retirement just to fight Conor McGregor,” Mayweather said. “I don’t want to hear no more excuses about the money (or) about the UFC. Sign the paper with the UFC, so you can fight me in June. Simple and plain. Let’s fight in June.”
So a week after publically calling McGregor out to sign a contract, he has reportedly requested a major venue in Las Vegas.
The quote above kind of suggests that an offer does exist and it can include the UFC.
UFC President Dana White has shot the idea of Mayweather vs McGregor down publicly several times. He insists there has been zero talk between the UFC and Mayweather collaborating on a Mayweather vs McGregor fight.
As for McGregor himself, he appears very interested in the fight. He has also publicly challenged Floyd as well, even receiving a Boxing license in California a few months ago.
If a deal is struck, most surmise it would absolutely have to include the UFC. There is some discussion about McGregor, using the Ali Act, could block the UFC from involvement in the fight, but that would be something that would take a long time in court to settle.
It would certainly not done in time for a June date.
Even considering how bizarre this showdown would be, there's one real certainy: Money. We're talking near Mayweather vs Pacquiao numbers.
Floyd isn't simply throwing McGregor's name around to troll the media and fans, this is a fight Mayweather wants. Not only is it supposedly an easy fight for him, it's one that could make him a lot of money.
So we have a date and a venue, and we might have a contract but will we get an agreement?
