Amir Khan: Purse for Canelo fight is how high?
Ca-Ching! British boxing sensation may have just hit the lottery.
According to Daily Star, Khan will earn a handsome £ 9million [13.1 million USD] for Saturday's clash with WBC/RING middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.
Canelo vs Khan, of course, will be broadcast in the U.S. via PPV and BoxNation in the UK.
Sidenote: It was previously reported by FightSaga via TotalSportsTek, the 29 year old Khan would earn $6 million flat while Canelo Alvarez's purse was purported to be upwards of $10 million plus a share of PPV revenue, giving him the potential to earn between $12 million to $15 million.
As of Tuesday, May 3, we can surmise Khan is earning anywhere from $6 to $13 million. This article and others will be updated when more data collected.
The $13 million on Khan's end seems quite high. After all, Khan isn't facing Floyd Mayweather or a red hot Manny Pacquiao. Canelo is popular but certainly not on that level yet. That stated, Alvarez may not have asked for $25 million.
Last fall, Canelo's PPV showdown with fight legend Miguel Cotto generated 900,000 buys and $58 Million in revenue. Not since Tyson vs Lewis (2002) had a pay-per-view fight generated at least 900,000 buys without featuring Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao or Oscar De La Hoya.
However, Canelo, as the A-side fighter, has yet to crack a million. And his foe that evening, Miguel Cotto, has fairly sizable fanbase which contributed to the PPV's success.
From a standpoint of gross revenue, Saturday's fight may very well eclipse November's Canelo vs Cotto showdown due to Khan's massive international following. Viewership in the UK and, perhaps, Pakistan will be far heavier than Puerto Rican viewership was for Cotto vs Canelo.
How popular is Khan internationally?
... He has 3.8 million Facebook followers while Cotto has just over 800,000.
Perhaps the ultimate question as it relates to PPV numbers and revenue is: How many of those followers will pay to see Amir Khan partake in the biggest fight of his career?
