Anthony Yarde record: A deeper look

Light heavyweight challenger Anthony Yarde promises to upset WBO Champion Sergey Kovalev (33-3, 1 28 KO) when the pair tangles later tonight.

Yarde is certainly confident and is talking tough, and his record, to a degree, backs-up his swagger. However, his resume also suggests he could be in over his head tonight.

Anthony Yarde Record:
18 Wins, 0 Loses 0 Draws, 17 Knockouts, 94% KO Percentage

The 28 year old Yarde, who turned pro in May 2015, has been very successful thus far. Not only is he unbeaten, only one of 18 opponents have heard the final bell against the Brit.

A deeper look, however, reveals Anthony hasn't exactly been in the ring with world-beaters. In fact, there aren't any recognizable names on his resume so Sergey Kovalev is undoubtedly a big step up.

In March, Anthony stopped Travis Reeves (then 17-3, 7 KO) who doesn't have any names on his ledger either sans a TKO loss to Karo Murat last year.

And in Yarde's previous bout last October, the Brit stopped Walter Gabriel Sequeira (then 21-4) who had also not faced a name opponent.

Perhaps the most accomplished foe on Anthony's record is Nikola Sjekloca who was 32-4-1 when he was TKO'd by Yarde in December 2017. But Sjekloca boasted only 11 KOs at the time and, at 39, wasn't a spring chicken. That stated, Sjekloca, in his previous bout, scored a draw against former champ Robert Stieglitz.

He also went the distance, albeit in a losing effort, with current Top 12 Pound for Pound Fighter Callum Smith in 2014. And in the same year, he lost a UD to a still-dangerous Athur Abraham, a former champ.

Yarde could argue that by stopping Sjekloca inside the distance he did something Smith, Abraham and Stieglitz failed to do. He can also boast he's the only fighter to date to stop Sjekloca inside the distance in 41 fights.

But, was the then-39 year old Sjekloca the same fighter he was when he faced Abraham and Stieglitz at 35 or 36?

If you're looking for reasons Yarde will be no match for Sergey, you don't have to look far. Kovalev boasts much, much deeper amateur and pro pedigrees. In fact, the challenger had a mere 12 amateur bouts.

Yarde brings excitement because he's the Great Unknown. He's doing what a world-beater should do against the level of opposition he's faced.

The Brit has looked to amazing to this point but we don't know what'll happen when he steps into the ring with a polished, elite-level opponent like Sergey Kovalev who has faced much better opponents, has had more than double the number of pro fights (37) and boasts 10 more knockouts (28) than Anthony has bouts.
