Artur Beterbiev updates his fans; Returns July 29
Light heavyweight Artur Beterbiev (11-0, 11 KO) is a very special fighter.
Ranked in the top five of every sanctioning body in boxing, his style is reminiscent of young Mike Tyson's. Aggressive and action-packed, Beterbiev possesses tremendous punching power and fights with bad intentions.
The Light Heavyweight Mike Tyson?
"Iron Mike comparisons to me is a very flattering remark, I consider myself an ordinary boxer to him who at 20 years old became the youngest boxer to win a heavyweight title and reigned as the undisputed heavyweight champion," Beterbiev recently told FightSaga's Bernie Campbell.
Born and raised in the city of Khasavyurt, Russia of Chechnian decent, Artur, 32, is married and lives in the province of Quebec, Canada with his three children.
Having spent a good part of his career as an amateur, his professional stint has been stalled due to contractual defaults from GYM Promotions, a promoter in Montreal who is affiliated with Haymon Sports LLC. Artur was promised 4 fights per year and payment on time but the contractual stipulations, according to Beterbiev, were not honored. Thus, his contract is currently in litigation to terminate.
Beterbiev will fight a WBC title eliminator July 29th against Enrico Koelling (23-1, 6 KO).
"The problem has been in securing fights," Beterbiev stated.
"Boxers want huge compensation to fight me and that has limited my opportunities."
The amateurs and Sergey Kovalev
Beterbiev was a decorated amateur career with 150 bouts and represented Russia in the Olympics in 2008 and 2012. He also defeated superstar Sergey Kovalev at the semi-finals of the 2007 Russian Championships.
"At the time, I wasn’t too concerned with Kovalev as much as beating the No. 1 seed Eugeny Makanerko who I bested in the finals by eleven points."
Training and diet
"I am not perfect so I work on my boxing skills, during my training sessions I do my best to improve my punching power, finesse, stamina and mental and physical toughness."
"I invite coaches from the US to my training camp and learn tricks necessary to win. I stick to a strict diet during camp and not experiment with new foods, I eat strictly on time, consume all the necessary food ingredients contained in meat and other products, and I avoid junk food."
"The toughest opponent in the ring is myself. The more you sweat [in the gym] the less you bleed in war."
"I remember having very tough training camps against former champions Tavoris Cloud and Gabriel Campillo, however I did not have any problems in the ring and finished my bouts quickly."
A religious and patriotic man, Beterbiev admires Russian president Vladimir Putin.
"During his presidency my country regained its status as a world power. Moreover, the life of ordinary Russians improved under his leadership in the mid 90s."
So, who does Artur Beterbiev want to fight?
"I don’t care about my opponents, my goal is to fight the best boxers, Ward, Stevenson or Kovalev or any other. I think the boxing fans also want this."
