"Canelo Alvarez isn't afraid of GGG," insists Freddie RoachHot
Although Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will be challenging current WBO Super Welterweight titlist Liam Smith on Saturday, September 17, most media outlets and avid fight fans are buzzing about the prospect of a Middleweight showdown between the 26 year old phenom and current IBF, WBA, WBC, and IBO Champion Gennady Golovkin.
Despite claims from Canelo Alvarez and promoter Oscar De la Hoya that the clamored super-fight will indeed take place at this time, next year, Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach doesn't believe the coveted match-up will materialize.
"The thing is, it's a business and you have to make as much money as you can," Freddie Roach said FightHub TV. "These guys have to retire and they have to take care of their families for a long time after retirement. I just don't know if there's enough money in that fight."
But isn't "Canelo vs. Golovkin" the most demanded fight in boxing currently? Yes...unfortunately Freddie doesn't believe one specific fighter involved is capable of creating the demand to support or match the very high purse expectations.
"GGG...he might be the best pound for pound fighter in the world, but he's not the best PPV draw in the world. He just doesn't have a big audience on PPV."
While Roach thinks Golovkin is capable of eventually becoming a big PPV hit, the experienced trainer feels GGG hasn't been given the right dance partners to help him cultivate a mainstream audience.
"I think it's because he hasn't really had the right opponents," the seven-time trainer of the year told FightHub TV earlier this week. "Maybe that's not his fault. Maybe there are a lot of guys out there who won't fight him, but I'm sure he'll fight anybody."
Is Canelo one of the aforementioned fighters currently avoiding the hard punching Middleweight champion? Freddie feels he is, but not for the reason most fans believe.
Roach is certain Canelo Alvarez feels no genuine fear in facing Gennady Golovkin.
"Boxers in general aren't scared of anybody. Believe me, Canelo isn't fighting GGG because of his promoter."
"It has nothing to do with him being scared, I don't think. There's a business end of it also, and fighters have to listen to their managers and promoters...sometimes."
