Canelo Alvarez vs GGG: "I Don't Think It'll Happen"
Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach does not expect a middleweight showdown between Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0-31KO) and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KO) to come to fruition at all.
Freddie Roach believes the fight is too risky for both sides, especially Golden Boy Promotions whose one and only cash cow is Canelo.
"I don’t think that fight will happen, why would they take a chance with their best selling guy? "
"In my opinion, I don’t think that fight will happen because it makes no sense," Roach told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
Roach has a point but... Boxing history tells us these fights usually happen when the money is right.
Hence, public demand dictates policy.
Should Canelo and Golovkin sidestep each other, their stock - and purses - would drop over time unless they faced other stars. At some point, they'll be forced to face each other or other stars on that level or their careers would become stale.
Unlike Floyd Mayweather, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao, neither Canelo nor GGG has become so popular they can fight almost anyone on PPV and earn a hefty paycheck.
Fighters and promoters are all too happy to take risks.... When public demand justifies it.
