And while Canelo vs Kirkland may not be as impactful to boxing's landscape as as Pernell Whitaker vs Julio Cesar Chavez in 1993, May's fight may eclipse Whitaker vs Chavez an other way.
The Alamodome holds 72,000 and De Hoya is confident Canelo vs Kirkland will either sell out or break the attendance record of 59,995 set by the aforementioned boxing legends in their 1990s clash.
Can Mexican sensation Canelo Alvarez and the explosive James Kirkland hit 60,000?
Canelo last fought at the Alamodome in April 2013, Originally 33,000 tickets were allotted but they sold so fast that Golden Boy Promotions had to make an additional 3,000 tickets available. The final attendance tally was roughly 39,247.
But Alvarez is a bigger star now and his opponent, a Texan with a crowd-pleasing style, is a more attractive draw than Canelo's last opponent, Austin Trout.
In that contest, Canelo vs Trout, a straight-right hand preceded by a jab buckled the legs of Trout and sent him down for the first time in his career in the early seconds of the seventh round. Despite landing fewer punches, Canelo Alvarez would go on to win a unanimous decision in a bout most believed was much closer than the official scores indicated (116-111, 118-109 and 115-112).
Canelo vs Kirkland: Still no date?
Oscar is proceeding "full steam" with plans to stage "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) vs. James Kirkland (32-1, 28KOs) on May 2, free on HBO.
Should Floyd vs Manny be confirmed for the same day, De La Hoya has promised to reschedule Canelo's return for May 9.
Rumors are, however, there may be problems with the later date. If Mayweather and Pacquiao fight May 2, don't be surprised if the Canelo fight moves to Las Vegas where it'll likely play second fiddle to Mayweather vs Pacquiao the week before.
