Canelo vs Chavez prediction: Floyd Sr makes surprise decry?
Amir Khan has predicted an impressive Canelo victory but having been KO'd by Alvarez last year he might be a little biased. He learned, first-hand, how difficult Canelo was to hit cleanly and how hard and precise Alvarez's punches are.
So what does Floyd Mayweather Sr think about Canelo vs Chavez Jr?
FightHype recently caught up with former fighter and famed trainer to get his thoughts on the superfight.
"I think Canelo is a better boxer than him all the way around," Floyd Sr told FightHype.com.
"I think Canelo can pull that off...Canelo is a much better boxer...he's getting some of that [Floyd] Mayweather stuff in him too a little bit."
High praise considering the source.
"Canelo has a lot of things he can do [in the ring] and do well," Floyd Sr added.
The elder Mayweather also hinted he believes Canelo has picked up a few tricks from Floyd.
Canelo vs Chavez Jr
Date: May 6
Broadcast: HBO PPV
Division: Super Middleweight (164.5 lb catchweight)
Without making a direct prediction, it appears Floyd Sr is a strong advocate for Canelo in this fight.
While most fans notice Canelo's explosiveness, his roll-counter defense is very underrated. Hence, Alvarez is slippery in the ring, and boasts tremendous technique and ring guile.
You know... "that Mayweather stuff."
Don't be surprised if Canelo assumes more of a hit-and-move posture in the early rounds against naturally larger Chavez. The first 3 or 4 rounds may play out in similar fashion to Gennady Golovkin vs David Lemieux. In that bout, Golovkin, usually an aggressive brawler, boxed well early, utilizing a wicked jab and combinations to frustrate his powerful foe.
After he softened-up Lemieux, Gennady shifted gears and went into 'attack' mode en route to earning a stoppage in the eighth round.
Will we see a similar strategy employed by Canelo Alvarez on May 6?
