Canelo vs Fielding odds: Seriously?
In December, middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (50-1-1, 34 KO) will face WBA 'Regular' super middleweight title-holder Rocky Fielding (27-1, 15 KO).
Hailing from Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom, the 31 year old Rocky Fielding won the WBA 'Regular' Super Middleweight title in July by KOing Tyron Zeuge (then 22-0-1).
So, what are the Canelo vs Fielding odds?
Are you ready for this?
The bettor William Hill has Alvarez as a -2500 favorite while Fielding is the mammoth underdog at +800. Hence, a successful $2500 wager on Canelo would yield a scant $100 while a winning $100 bet on Fielding would generate a hefty $800.
Intertops also has Alvarez at -2500 while the WBA 'Regular' super middleweight champ is at +775. Several other bettors have their odds a little tighter.
Keep in mind, the super middleweight Fielding will be, by far, the largest opponent Alvarez has faced as most of Canelo's serious opponents have been jr middleweights and blown-up welterweights.
Fielding boasts a 4 or 5 inch height advantage over Canelo and a considerable reach advantage. Of course, the consensus is Fielding doesn't have the tools to outpoint, outbrawl or KO the Mexican.
Are we underestimating the Brit?
Having suffered a second round defeated to Brit Rocky Fielding in 2015, veteran Bryan Vera said of the upcoming Canelo vs Fielding bout:
"Fielding is no joke. He is well conditioned and he hits hard. I was surprised Canelo took the fight."
Consider the source... Coming from a fella like Vera who was fought a literal who's who in the middleweight division the last 10 years, those are serious words.
Prediction: Canelo vs Fielding will be a lot closer than the odds suggest. No, that doesn't mean I'm predicting an upset but Fielding appears to have the size and style to give Alvarez problem.
A Fielding obstacle: Canelo is the strong A-side with a sexy style so Fielding won't win a decision unless he delivers a boxing clinic and/or put Alvarez on the canvas a few times.
Perhaps that's what compels bettors to make Canelo such a heavy favorite? Nevertheless, Fielding's size makes this fight intriguing. He's never faced an opponent anywhere near Fielding's size.
Given Canelo can no longer fight comfortably at 154 lbs, there's certainly some concern among Canelo's handlers about how their man, at 5'8", will match up against elite-level, long-armed middleweights with hit-and-move styles who'll look to use their reach advantage to outwork Alvarez from a distance.
