Canelo vs GGG prediction: Former Golovkin foe shows little respect
A fighter who has been KO'd by former foe usually gives his conqueror the edge in upcoming superfights. After all, having been in the ring with him, the losing fighter has usually developed a certain level of respect for the fella who knocked him out.
... Not the case with Willie Monroe and Gennady Golovkin.
In May 2016, Golovkin floored Monroe twice in the second round before stopping him in Round 6. It was a solid, non-controversial knockout.
Willie knows, firsthand, what a beast GGG can be in the ring yet he's picking Canelo to defeat Golovkin in September.
In fact, he predicts a 9th or 10th Round stoppage.
Monroe, who faces England’s Billy Joe Saunders on September 16, told BoxNation recently:
“I’m gonna go with Canelo."
“It’s funny,” Monroe said. “Right after I fought Golovkin, 15 minutes after I got out of the ring, they said, ‘Who do you think will win out of Canelo and Golovkin?’ I said, ‘I think Canelo would win.’ Everybody said, ‘Aw, you’re being a sore loser.’ I said, ‘How could I be a sore loser? I just got out of the ring 15 minutes ago. I’m still getting my faculties together.’ ”
And Monroe, who accurately predicted Andre Ward would stop Sergey Kovalev in their rematch last month, used his experience in the ring with Golovkin to support his prediction.
“When I fought Golovkin, in rounds three, four and five, where I got my best work done at, was on the inside,” Monroe explained. “And I found out that Golovkin is a mid-range fighter."
"If you’re too far away from him, he’s just gonna walk you down and try to cut off the ring. If you’re too close to him, he can’t get off. When you’re right in his wheelhouse, right in his power, that’s where he can be really dangerous. That’s where he is dangerous at."
Problem: Canelo Alvarez is not the type of fighter who will be as close to GGG as his underwear.
FightSaga Radio's expert and three-decade fight trainer James Gogue told us last year:
"Against a very strong fighter like Canelo Alvarez, you would see Golovkin work patiently behind his jab and establish it to the body and head over the first few rounds. And once he figured out the timing and rhythm of the explosive counter puncher, Triple G would start taking the fight to the inside and throwing short, compact hooks and uppercuts to the body and head of Canelo.”
In fact, Trainer Gogue expects Golovkin to close the distance and not vice versa.

"Gennady's jab is like most fighters' right hands, so it takes a serious toll on his opponents, consistently pounding them with that unusually strong lead hand. Jab by jab, round by round, he's going to start to break him down. It's the first step in his effective process of breaking down his opponents."
"Once he [Golovkin] establishes the jab in rhythm, sees that it's breaking down his opponent and slowing him down, then he's going to start closing the distance and working the body. That's step two in his breakdown process."
"Then when he knows he's limited your ability to move around the ring proficiently with a steady and consistent attack to the body, he'll start putting his punches together in short, sharp combinations to the body and head. That's the final step...if he gets to the third and final step, his opponent is getting knocked out."
