Canelo vs Khan Prediction: Trainer Makes Surprise Forecast?
Many are dismissing Amir Khan's (31-3, 19 KO) chances to defeat middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) on May 7, including fighters Paul Malignaggi and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
But Khan's former mentor, Freddie Roach, insists Khan has, at the very least, a chance to win so long as he stays disciplined and extremely focused.
And recently, another top trainer stated Canelo vs Khan is not the mis-match many are labeling it.
Canelo vs Khan
Date: May 7
Venue: T-Mobile Arena
Location: Las Vegas
TV: HBO PPV (U.S.)
Titles: WBC, RING Magazine
Catchweight: 155 lbs
Elite level trainer Robert Garcia told BoxingScene: "A lot of people are not happy about that fight, but I actually think that it's going to be a pretty close fight."
"Khan is a little bit taller than Canelo. Khan is very fast and moves very well, so that can give Canelo problems."
"I'm not saying Khan beats Canelo, and I'm not as excited as I was for Cotto-Canelo, but it is an interesting fight and it is a fight that I want to see."
So, without offering a prediction as it relates to the result, Garcia foresees this bout as competitive, and not the three or found round annihilation some are predicting.
Robert Garcia is a former International Boxing Federation Super Featherweight Champion (1998-99) and has trained the likes of Nonito Donaire, Kelly Pavlik, Antonio Margarito, Brandon Rios, Joan Guzman, Mikey Garcia, Marcos Maidana and Thomas Dulorme.
