Canelo vs Khan undercard to feature David Lemieux vs Glen Tapia
Canadian middleweight and former title-holder David Lemieux will likely face hard-nosed Glen Tapia on May 7 on the Canelo vs Khan undercard.
"Frankie Gomez is going to fight Mauricio Herrera, and then [there's] the one I like, David Lemieux vs Glen Tapia," legendary, hall of fame matchmaker and promoter Don Chargin told Joseph Herron on the 'War a Week Radio' last night.
According to Mr. Chargin, Lemieux vs Tapia is "very, very close" to being finalized.
"These are the kind of fights we have to [have]," he added.
Last week, David Lemieux's (34-3, 31 KO) fight with James de la Rosa was cancelled because the former missed the contracted weight by 2.6 pounds at Friday afternoon's weigh-in at the Casino de Montreal. But Chargin insists David was sick for awhile prior to the fight and simply wasn't able to shed the necessary weight fast enough.
The matchmaker/promoter assured Herron that Lemieux is a solid middleweight who'll have no problem making the 160 lb weight limit on May 7.
Tapia, at 23-2, 15 KO, is perhaps most known for his dramatic war with James Kirkland in 2013. Then 20-0, Tapia opened explosively with power shots in the first minute and a half and appeared to be en route to scoring a first round knockout. However, Kirkland weathered the storm and the two delivered furious, toe-to-toe action until Kirkland knocked out Tapia in Round 6.
