On Tuesday, March 3, Canelo Alvarez and James Kirkland met face to face during a two-city press tour, in support of their scheduled May 9th battle at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. And if their initial face-off is any indication of what fight fans are to expect just two months from now, the boxing community will be in for a real treat at the 41K seat ballpark.

President of Golden Boy Promotions and Hall of Fame fighter Oscar De la Hoya is more than pleased with early ticket sales for the HBO televised event.

“In just the first day, we sold over 15,000 tickets for this fight,” claims the six division world champion. “It’s amazing…incredible. We’re really excited for this fight. Canelo vs. Kirkland is going to be a really fun fight to watch.”

“Kirkland seems to be really motivated for Canelo. He’s been in the gym with his new team and is really working hard for a fight that he’s wanted for a very long time.”

Many pundits have been questioning the Austin, Texas native’s decision to move from renowned trainer and five-time women’s world champion Ann Wolfe to work with eleven year fight trainer, but relative unknown, Rick Morones Jr.

James feels that his critics aren’t giving him enough credit for his ring accomplishments.

“James Kirkland is James Kirkland,” stated the 30 year old fighter. “I’m the one who puts the work in…I decide my own outcome. You may have a team or coach that motivates you and pushes you to the next level, but overall it’s the fighter that has to get in the ring and take care of business.”

“But my new team is excellent. I have a great support system behind me. From the conditioning to the work we do in the gym, it’s a great package all the way around.”

Canelo is preparing for the best possible version of “The Mandingo Warrior” on May 9.

“It’s going to be a great fight because of the style match-up,” professes the former Junior Middleweight Champion. “It’s going to be a very explosive fight for the fans. Both of us are going to be trading punches in the middle of the ring, and it’s going to be an excellent fight.”

“I know this is a dangerous fight against a very hard puncher, but these are the fights that I like. I do this for my fans. On May 9th, expect to see a great fight.”
