Despite negative widespread rumors concerning the focus and motivation of perennial Super Welterweight contender James Kirkland, the “Mandingo Warrior” from Austin, Texas, appears to be taking his perceived toughest test to date very seriously.
According to a post published by assistant trainer Gerald Tucker Sr. on his respective “Instagram” account, the hard punching southpaw weighed in today at approximately 169.4 pounds. With more than five weeks remaining until he steps in the ring with former 154 pound champion Canelo Alvarez on May 9, the update is a very positive sign for fight fans who are hoping to see an explosive and competitive event at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
Head trainer Rick Morones Jr. insists Kirkland’s weight is a product of his determination and focus at the Team Morones Boxing Club in San Antonio, Texas.
“I can’t emphasize enough how motivated James is for this fight with Canelo Alvarez,” claims the talented, young fight trainer."
“He understands what’s ultimately at stake with this opportunity, and has been working extremely hard to show fight fans the best version of James Kirkland on May 9.”
With the added efforts of expert strength and conditioning coach Bremond “Bay Bay” McClinton, the devastating, 31 year old puncher seems to be reaping the benefits of hard his work and dedication in San Antonio, Texas.
“Bay Bay is a world class strength and conditioning coach,” gushes Rick Morones Jr. “We’re very fortunate to be working with him in this camp. His efforts with James have been vital in implementing the proper game plan for a great fighter like Canelo Alvarez. It’s really made my job a lot easier. Instead of focusing on weight loss for this camp, we‘ve been able to focus our efforts on our strategy to be victorious on May 9.”
Although Morones refused to divulge any strategic information on Team Kirkland’s fight plan for the big event in Houston, Texas, the ambitious boxing coach did affirm that conditioning and weight weren’t going to be factors in this match-up.
“James is going to be in great shape on May 9,” stated the Alamo City based fight trainer. “And a well conditioned James Kirkland, is a very dangerous fighter. Fight fans should really look forward to a competitive fight in Houston, Texas.”
