Canelo vs Triple G sparring: Was Golovkin holding back?

In the biggest middleweight title fight since Sugar Ray Leonard vs Marvin Hagler 30 years ago, WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight champion Gennady 'Triple G' Golovkin will face Canelo Alvarez on September 16 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

However, the fight won't serve as the first time the two traded shots in a ring.

In 2011 or 2012, a young Canelo sparred Triple G in Big Bear, California, and there are varying accounts of what happened.

Some insist the sparring sessions were even and competitive while others say Triple G got the better of Canelo.

Regardless of what happened, one pro insists Triple held back on Canelo who was only 20 or 21 at the time.

Carson Jones, who is training with Triple G for his September 2nd bout with Antonio Margarito and witnessed the sparring, recently told BoxingScene.com:

"G was kind of taking it easy. He holds back a little bit in sparring. I saw it but it was what it was back in the day. Canelo has gotten better and G has gotten better too. It should be a heck of a fight on September 16th," said Jones.

Jones also made some good points about what sparring is all about. Sparring, of course, is not fighting. You don't try to brutalize your opponent. The main objective is to sharpen the skills of one or both participants. It is a learning process for all who wish to participate. When someone with superior skills knocks out his opponent in the first round of a sparring match, nobody wins.

Moreover, even an inferior opponent can sometimes make you a better fighter because he/she may possess fighting traits that compliment your weaknesses.

To that end, Jones added: "G is a nice guy but he is a killer. Sparring is one thing but in a fight, it is different. If you hurt your sparring partner too bad you might lose that sparring partner and he wants to get that work in and work on different stuff."

"Sparring isn't about how bad you beat your sparring partner. You want to work on different things to get ready for the fight."

Question: If Triple G went easy on Canelo, how do we know Canelo didn't hold back with Triple G?

"Abel knows what he is doing. He probably knew that one day they might fight," Jones added.

Jones said that Sanchez may have foresaw a fight between Canelo and GGG back then and didn't want Golovkin to do too much in sparring.

"[Triple G] is looking good. He trains hard just like always. Everybody here all trains at only one speed and that is 100. He just has one speed."

"I am expecting a good fight and I am expecting Gennady to come out on top," added Jones.
