David Haye and Shannon Briggs: On a collision course?

Lee Cleveland Updated February 13, 2019

Boxing superstar David Haye returns to the ring May 21 to face undefeated Arnold Gjergjaj O2 in London.

The fight will serve as Haye's second in just four months as he seems serious about his comeback.

Should David defeat Gjergjaj, who would be next? Would the colorful former cruiserweight and heavyweight belt-holder get a shot at a title?

... Or would he take a high-profile showdown with 44 year old Shannon Briggs, also a former belt-holder?

Heavyweight contender Anthony Joshua thinks Haye vs Briggs is, at the very least, probable.

"He's [Shannon Briggs] a real character and a good guy and a good man for the sport," Joshua told Sky Sports.

"He's been a heavyweight world champion and I am sure he'll get another go - if he keeps barking at the right person, someone is going to bite back.

"I think Haye will probably fight him."

Briggs is perhaps the most interesting heavyweight in boxing and a 'question mark' of sorts.

His antics have received mainstream attention and he has the charisma to sell tickets. Moreover, he is 8-0, 6 KO on his two year old comeback, boasts a strong amateur pedigree and has 33 first round knockouts (the most for any heavyweight champion).

However, it's not known how much the 44 year old Briggs has left because he hasn't faced a top 30 guy on his comeback, and hasn't beaten a top 10 heavyweight since 2006. (Briggs took a four year hiatus following a 2010 loss to Vitali Klitschko).

Briggs is enigma in many ways. We don't know how good he really is but can assume without hesitance Haye vs Briggs would be a blockbuster draw.

Will David Haye roll the dice?
