Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao era: Did it officially end this week?Hot
Did the Mayweather-Pacquiao era officially end this week?
For the first time in years, neither Manny Pacquiao nor Floyd Mayweather is The RING's No. 1 welterweight as of yesterday.
In fact, how long has it been since neither fighter was ranked No.1 in any division by the prestigious RING Magazine?
... Perhaps 2005 or 2006?
So who is the new number one?
Answer: Kell Brook, the IBF champion.
On Saturday in his native Sheffield, Brook, showing polish, precision and power, brutalized mandatory challenger Kevin Bizier in less than two rounds. It was the first time Bizier had been halted inside the distance in 30 fights, and Brook improved to 36-0, 25 KO.
For nearly a decade, Mayweather and Pacquiao have transcended boxing and dominated so many awesome fighters.
Although Floyd retired a few months ago, it's still hard to imagine a division without Floyd or Manny at No.1.
This week's Welterweight RING ratings are as follows:
1. KELL BROOK
2. MANNY PACQUIAO
3. AMIR KHAN
4. TIM BRADLEY
5. KEITH THURMAN
6. SHAWN PORTER
7. DANNY GARCIA
8. ERROL SPENCE
9. JESSIE VARGAS
10. DMITRY MIKHAYLENKO
Of course, there's a strong chance Manny Pacquiao, who faces Tim Bradley next weekend, will move into that top slot again with a strong showing. Nevertheless, we may have entered a new era in boxing.
