Floyd Mayweather comeback? 'Money May' should give it another go
On Thursday, October 19, a very interesting video surfaced on social media.
The video was a short snippet of Floyd "Money" Mayweather training at his gym. Decked out in full gear, he was banging the heavy bag.
Speculation soon followed: Is he fighting again?
It sure didn't seem like he was going through the motions. However, Floyd is a fitness addict who loves attention so we shouldn't get too excited.
And while no one except Floyd knows for sure if he is going to fight again, I would like to see him have one more go in the ring.
For starters, Floyd is in incredible shape. At 40 years old, he looks and moves like a much younger man. Combine that with his defense-first style and pure dedication to his craft, and I believe Floyd could fight at an elite level for two or three more years, easily.
Floyd has never been knocked down and has seldom been hurt or rocked. Moreover, Floyd hasn't been in the type of wars that can shorten a fighter's career so there shouldn't be much worry or concern of Floyd getting old or seriously hurt. Like Bernard Hopkins, he has a style that is built to last.
Like many fight fans across the globe, I was disappointed by Floyd's choices for his last two opponents. No disrespect to Andre Berto or Conor McGregor, but Floyd was heavily expected to win those fights. Fans want to see him challenged. We want to see Floyd against a threatening opponent.
There are so many options, including: Keith Thurman, Terence Crawford, Errol Spence Jr., Gennady Golovkin or a rematch with Canelo Alvarez. Even one of the Charlo Brothers would make for an excellent fight. And while Floyd would be a betting favorite in some of those fights, the threat of losing would be real in each case.
If Floyd were to fight anyone of those guys, he would garner huge respect from the boxing community, win or lose. Just taking a big risk this late in his career would do more for his legacy than anything else. And a victory over any of those elite-level fighters would solidify, or at least strengthen, his TBE claim... And that is something I would love to see.
