Freddie Roach: "Gennady Golovkin might have the best footwork in boxing"Hot
In a 2014 interview with ESPN's Michelle Beadle, six-time "Trainer of the Year" award recipient Freddie Roach gave high praise to a highly touted world champion in the Middleweight division...and it wasn't Miguel Cotto.
"I've only seen Gennady Golovkin fight once, but he might have the best footwork in boxing," stated the elite level boxing coach.
"He keeps himself in a good position about 90% of the time during a fight."
"When you do that, you're winning the fight about 90% of the time. And that's why he's where he is today."
"First of all, I think Freddie might be exaggerating when he says he's only seen Gennady fight one time," claims the Summit Gym proprietor. "As a trainer, I always like to keep an eye on fighters we could be competing with in the future. Being the elite level trainer that he is, I'm sure Freddie has the same practices and has become very familiar with Gennady's attributes in the ring as a result."
"Also, I don't agree with his observation that Gennady keeps himself in position only 90% of the time."
"My fighter stays in position 100% of the time. It's an area that we've worked on extensively for the last several years."
"Gennady not only positions himself to throw the right punches, but his footwork also allows him to dictate the pace of the fight while forcing his opponents into punching range."
In the aforementioned interview, the Wildcard Gym leader also stated that Golovkin does have the potential to develop into a mainstream star if he fights bigger names and becomes more well known by the American public.
Coach Sanchez not only agrees with the observation, but also believes Gennady Golovkin could face the winner of the proposed Cotto/Canelo super fight in the near future.
"Obviously we're completely focused on Martin Murray at this time," professes Abel Sanchez." But I hope the winner of Canelo/Cotto honors the ruling of the WBC, which recently announced that the eventual winner has to defend the WBC Middleweight title against the interim champion...which is currently Gennady Golovkin."
While most boxing insiders and fight scribes slightly favor the younger and naturally bigger fighter before the proposed "Mexico vs. Puerto Rico" super fight, the experienced boxing strategist believes the match to be a "toss-up" at this time.
"If you look at their respective bouts with Floyd Mayweather Jr., Cotto actually gave Floyd the more competitive fight. Miguel is a four division world champion and has the edge in experience. I could easily see either fighter winning that contest."
