Gennady Golovkin vs Carl Froch on tap? Talks underway for sizzler
Will Carl Froch face Gennady Golovkin at Wembley Stadium later this year?
According to The Mail, Eddie Kearn, promoter of super-middleweight star Carl Froch, is negotiating with Team Golovkin to make it happen.
“I’ve now spoken directly with Carl about this and he is interested,” Hearn told Mail Online.
“I only want him to take it if he’s genuinely motivated because it is a high-risk fight."
"But it would be massive and we can fill Wembley again. Given Carl’s interest, we have already begun negotiations with Golovkin’s people and they are very keen.”
Not only are Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KO) and Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KO) believed to be top 10 pound-for-pound fighters, both are recognized as two of the sport's most exciting elite-level combatants. Moreover, both fighters are in need of a high-profile opponent.
If Carl truly is interested, there's no reason why Froch vs Golovkin shouldn't happen later this year.
In January, Team Froch was adamant they wouldn't consider fighting Golovkin without a certainty of big PPV numbers. Perhaps something has changed? Or maybe, following Golovkin's performance against Willie Monroe Saturday, Froch & Co. believes the reward for fighting Golovkin equals or surpasses the risks?
Froch vs Golovkin is a 'can't miss' match-up, stylistically, and would undoubtedly have a heavy impact on the landscape of the middleweight and super middleweight divisions, boxing's mythical pound-for-pound list and, perhaps, the sport overall.
