Gennady Golovkin vs Gilberto Ramirez in 2016?Hot
Will newly-crowned WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramirez face unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin later this year?
Team Golovkin is seeking high-profile fights and Ramirez’s awesome shutout of Arthur Abraham on the Pacquiao vs Bradley 3 undercard last weekend makes Gilberto a prime target.
Will Gennady jaunt to super middleweight?
“If Canelo or Saunders won’t fight, Ramirez is the best option.… I’ve learned with Gennady I need a Plan A, B and C … so we can get a date,” Tom Loeffler, Golovkin's promoter, told the latimes.com.
“Ramirez would be the biggest fighter [at nearly 6-foot-2] that Gennady has fought. He has a following and gained new fans Saturday night. It’d be a huge event, to combine that with the momentum and energy Gennady has. Gennady just needs to win April 23.”
Will Team Ramirez allow their 24 year old to face such a menacing, experienced opponent right away?
While Gilberto is the naturally bigger man and would enjoy a four inch height advantage, Gennady Golovkin has an amazing sense of range, and excellent timing.
And don’t forget… According to trainer Abel Sanchez, Golovkin got the better of current light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev when the latter was training under Sanchez.
"Kovalev was afraid of Golovkin when he was in the ring with him,” Abel Sanchez told HustleBoss in 2013. “I couldn’t spar them too much because Kovalev showed Gennady too much respect in the ring."
"When he did spar Gennady, Sergey would fall apart and wouldn’t pose much of a challenge for Golovkin. It was either too much respect or too much fear.”
Styles make fights and Kovalev’s style is much different than Ramirez’s. However, the 34 year old Golovkin would be a difficult and dangerous challenge for any fighter, from middleweight to light heavyweight.
