Gennady Golovkin vs Kell Brook: Why Manny Pacquiao has everything to gain
Should Brook, the top-rated welterweight, orchestrate the upset against middleweight powerhouse Gennady Golovkin, one fighter stands to gain tremendously.
PacMan has a November 5th showdown with Jessie Vargas but Team Pacquiao will undoubtedly play the role of "interested spectator" during the Gennady Golovkin vs Kell Brook bout.
Should Manny and Kell win their respective next fights, a Pacquiao vs Brook bout would be one of the biggest fights in boxing in the last 10 years.
The old pro vs the young star... Accomplished legend vs boxing's presumed future.
Would we see a passing of the torch or would Brook be yet another feather in PacMan's provervial cap of success?
Could Manny do it? Everyone would want to know.
As for Team Brook, they'd forget about Amir Khan and young stud Errol Spence for the time being, and would undoubtedly seek a welterweight showdown with the all-time great. Sans Floyd Mayweather vs Brook, could Kell find a bigger opponent than Manny Pacquiao?
And for Manny Pacquiao, an iconic fighter with diminished stock who is presumably in need of a career jolt and a hefty payday, a superfight with Kell Brook would be tantamount to a gift from the heavens.
A Pacquiao vs Brook showdown, should the latter upset Golovkin next week, would make Team Pacquiao forget all about its recent failure to lure Adrien Broner and Danny Garcia in the ring. And while such a match-up may not generate as much buzz in the U.S. as Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto or PacMan vs Marquez 3 or 4, it would be smashing success in Europe, particularly the United Kingdom.
Would Manny Pacquiao vs Kell Brook be the biggest fight on British soil should the latter upset Golovkin?
Answer: Yes - If PacMan defeats Vargas and looks solid doing so.
From a revenue perspective, a Kell Brook fight may serve as the second or third highest grossing bout in Manny's career. Keep in mind, regardless of where the bout would take place, Pacquiao would earn no less than Brook. In fact, Manny would likely earn at least 52 to 55 percent of the fighters' all-inclusive purse.
And should Manny defeat Brook, he would become the King of Boxing again and reap the spoils that come with it.
He would have the luxury of picking and choosing opponents as he pleases going forward, without having to worry about greatly reduced purses and network disputes.
Despite his awesome performance against Tim Bradley in April, the 37 year old Pacquiao, as a fighter, is seemingly down on his luck these days.
.... Will Kell Brook be the answer to his prayers?
