Golovkin vs Brook and Brexit: Bob Arum unleashes on Brit's chancesHot
While promoting this weekend's big 140 pound unification bout in Las Vegas, between WBO title holder Terence "Bud" Crawford and WBC champ Viktor Postol, Top Rank exec and Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum shared his thoughts on another big event already scheduled for September 10.
Although IBF Welterweight champion Kell Brook versus the current Middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin has absolutely nothing to do with Arum's promotional outfit, the 84 year old promoter didn't hesitate in sharing his thoughts on how the controversial pairing came together.
"Why did it happen," questioned Bob Arum. "Why did Kell Brook decide to fight Triple G and not Jessie Vargas? Because you read the f***ing newspapers, that's why?"
"The English decided to pull out of the European Union and the pound was devalued by 20%. So all of Eddie Hearn's plans to pay Vargas, to pay Brook, fell apart because the pound wasn't worth what it was when he made the deal."
The Bobfather sounded legitimately disgruntled when discussing the collapse of a proposed Welterweight unification bout between Special K and his fighter, Jesssie Vargas, which was at one time thought to be a "done deal".
But with the fallout of the projected Golovkin/Eubank match-up at Middleweight, Hearn propositioned the current IBF title holder with the bigger money event against Golovkin, and subsequently announced the unexpected pairing between Brook and GGG.
"There's nothing wrong with that," Arum explained to FightHubTV. "You've got to admire Kell Brook's balls, because most Middleweights won't go in with Golovkin, and now here's this Welterweight who's going to step in the ring with him."
As much as the Top Rank CEO admires Brook's "moxie", his fifty years of experience in the fight game leads him to believe the popular British champion will ultimately get knocked out on September 10.
"I did Monzon vs. Napoles and many other matches which pitted welterweights against middleweights, and the result is generally the same; the Welterweight tries and gets the s**t kicked out of him."
"The same thing is going to happen to Kell Brook. But you've got to give him credit."
Although Arum's WBO Welterweight title holder is currently without a dance partner, Jessie Vargas has been named as a candidate to face boxing icon Manny Pacquiao on November 5. The Las Vegas based fighter will know more about his chances to face the Pacman after this Saturday night's main event between Terence Crawford and Viktor Postol has concluded.
"We'll find out in one week whether or not Vargas will be fighting Pacquiao in the Fall."
