According to fight legend Bernard Hopkins, the odds as of August 22nd are 16 to 1 in Golovkin's favor.
"What he [David Lemieux] has to do is follow the blueprint and be perfect – yes I said that word," Hopkins told BoxingScene.com.
"The odds are 16:1?"
"Buster Douglas had worse odds than that when he beat Tyson. It can be done when you have a real live dog that can step it up when it’s time.”
Sixteen to one?
Odds often fluctuate, and Golovkin vs Lemieux is still 8-9 weeks away but the perceived edge to Gennady seems a bit high, even at this point.
Odds for Sergey Kovalev vs Nadjib Mohammedi on July 25 were 16 to 1 at fight time.
Are Lemieux's chances of scoring the upset comparable to Mohammedi's last month?
Gennady has the deeper amateur pedigree and presumably boasts superior technical skills. Moreover, David won't have an advantage in size nor speed, and GGG has recorded a bloodcurdling 20 consecutive knockouts while two of Lemieux's last five fights have gone the distance.
On paper, Golovkin should be the decisive favorite - and he obviously is; But punching power is the great equalizer in boxing and Lemieux boasts it in volumes, winning 34 of his 36 bouts and recording 31 knockouts in the process.
Lemieux is the most threatening opponent for Golovkin to date and that alone should account for something.
Perhaps 8 to 1 would be more suitable?
