Golovkin vs Lemieux PPV buys: What's realistic?
Tonight’s middleweight unification bout between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) and IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) promises to be action packed from the opening bell.
This is definitely the fight fans were eagerly awaiting; a fight between two of the hardest punchers in the middleweight division. They’ve already sold out Madison Square Garden, now the question is how many pay per view buys they will have.
For the past few years, Golovkin’s stardom has risen greatly due to his fan friendly style and 20 consecutive knockouts streak. This has made him a must see attraction on regular TV. David Lemieux has gained more notoriety since knocking out Gabriel Rosado back in December at the Barclays Center. But, he’s still, for the most part, an unknown to casual fans since tonight will mark on his second fight in the US. So don’t expect this fight to come close to a million pay per view buys.
A realistic number of pay per view buys would be around 350k, roughly the number that Canelo Alvarez vs. Alfredo Angulo generated in 2014. It was Canelo’s first fight since being thoroughly outclassed for 12 rounds by Floyd Mayweather, so there was intrigue to see how he would fair after suffering his first professional loss.
Golovkin’s fan base is closely approaching the fan base that Canelo has, so it’s not unreasonable to think this fight won’t produce similar PPV buys.
HBO has done an excellent job of promoting this fight with two shows: Road To Golovkin/Lemieux and the Golovkin/Lemiuex Faceoff with Max Kellerman. In addition, they have shown replays of each other’s prior fights this week.
In addition to the main event, the undercard is solidly highlighted by WBC Flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez (43-0, 37 KOs) who has been named the number one pound for pound fighter by ESPN and Ring Magazine, taking on Brian Viloria (36-4, 22 KOs, 2 NC). Viloria is seen as a live underdog in this contest and this fight will definitely help boost the pay per view number.
If tonight’s event can come close to 350k pay per view buys, it will be a huge success to the delight of both Golden Boy Promotions and K2 Promotions.
