Haye vs Bellew 2 undercard: Joyce vs Thomas likely?
Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist Joe Joyce (3-0) is presumably targeting Commonwealth (British Empire) Heavyweight title-holder Lenroy Thomas (22-4-1, 10 KO) for the David Haye vs Tony Bellew 2 undercard on May 5th.
Of course, last night heavyweight veteran Dereck Chisora called out Joyce following the former's spectacular KO win on the Dillian Whyte vs Lucas Browne undercard.
But Joyce's promoter, Haye, seems to be angling for the 33 year old Thomas instead.
Not only would a win over Thomas serve as a valuable professional-level stepping stone of sorts for Joyce, but status as the Commonwealth (British Empire) Heavyweight Champion would bolster his stock a bit and give him added leverage in future bouts. Moreover, claiming the title on the Haye vs Bellew 2 undercard would generate added buzz for Joyce.
Who is Lenroy Thomas?
Born in St. Catherine, Jamaica and based in St. Petersburg, Thomas turned pro in 2006 and boasts a record of 22-4-1, 10 KO. After losing his debut, he reeled off 16 straight wins before losing to Aaron Lyons.
In August 2013, Thomas was also KO'd by current contender Dominic Breazeale.
A southpaw, Thomas won the Commonwealth (British Empire) Heavyweight title via split decision over David Allen in May 2017. Their rematch earlier this month ended in a 1st Round technical draw.
Allen insists he wants to fight Thomas again but was realistic about the situation, telling SkySports, "Maybe [Joe Joyce] is a bigger fight for him, why not? If I was him, I'd fight Joyce. We'll both beat him, so he should lose to Joyce then lose to me."
