Michael Hunter (18-1, 12 KO) vs Alexander Povetkin (35-2, 24 KO), a dangerous match-up for two heavyweight contentenders, will take place in Saudi Arabia on the Joshua vs Ruiz 2 undercard.

With all the buzz about about Joshua vs Ruiz 2 and Wilder vs Ortiz 2, Hunter vs Povetkin isn't getting a lot of press but is still intriguing. It's a well-matched bout that will have an impact on the landscape of the heavyweight division.

If Michael, 31, wins, he becomes a serious contender a la Luis Ortiz, Kubrat Pulev, Oleksandr Usyk and Dillian Whyte. And if the Russian wins, he'll take one step closer to getting his third shot at a heavyweight title. A loss for the 40 year old Povetkin, a major player in the division since 2010, would be a heavy, perhaps career-ending, setback.

Povetkin vs Hunter odds
Despite Alex's vast experience and general status as a top 5 heavyweight the last 9 years, Hunter will likely be the favorite when the pair step into the ring.

bet365 and skybet list the American as an 8/15 favorite while Povetkin is the underdog at 11/8. Hence, a successful $100 wager on the American would payout $54 while the same winning wager on Alex would net $138.

The odds of a draw, for both bettors, is 25 to 1.

  • BoxRec rankings: Povetkin and Hunter are ranked Nos. 6 and 22, respectively.

Let's cycle back to Povetkin vs Hughie Fury on August 31. Even though many liked Fury's chances oddsmakers still made Povetkin their favorite and the latter didn't disappoint, winning a clear decision over his younger foe.

Will the odds prove to be right, again?

I'm not sure what bettors are seeing this time. Perhaps they think Father Time will catch up with the 40 year old. And maybe that August win over Hughie Fury dropped Alex's stock a bit? After all, it was an ugly affair in a bout that's probably not worth remembering.

However, Fury, with his awkward, hit-and-move, defensive style isn't the easiest of fighters to look good against. In fact, FightSaga hinted the fight would probably be boring for casual fans.

Povetkin, who took the fight on just 4 weeks notice and arguably dropped the first three rounds, landed the cleaner and more impactful shots throughout to earn a 117-111 verdict.

Povetkin vs Fury highlights

So yes, the 40 year old can still hang in the upper sphere of the heavyweight division but Hunter is still a question mark of sorts at the elite level. His September win over surging Sergey Kuzmin (the 15-0) certainly raised some eyebrows. It was Michael's sixth fight as a heavyweight and his first against a legitimate top 15 or 20 contender. But Sergey Kuzmin, despite being a worthy talent with a good future ahead of him, is not Alexander Povetkin. At least not yet.

Sure, Alex is 40 and was halted by Anthony Joshua last year, but the Russian is still one the most accomplished heavyweights over the last 10 years. Moreover, his lone losses are to Joshua and legend Wladimir Klitschko.

Conversely, Michael's only loss to date is a decision verdict in the cruiserweight division to top 10 pound-for-pound fighter Oleksandr Usyk.

Povetkin vs Hunter prediction
I liked what I saw by Povetkin in his ugly win over Fury. After a questionable first three rounds, he didn't get frustrated and eventually found the tight tonic to defeat a slippery, very defensive Fury.Povetkin pressed the action and impressively slipped most of Fury's big right hands. And despite never seriously hurting his foe, Povetkin certainly got Fury's attention on several occasions and provided good bodywork.

Credit Team Hunter for taking this fight but I think will have bitten off more than they can chew. Alex is a very strong, highly experienced heavyweight who possesses decent power and can box and slug.

Povetkin vs Hunter will be more entertaining than Povetkin vs Fury but the result will be similar ... A respectable, but not dominant, win for Povetkin.
