James Toney to fight May 13
Fight legend and former multi-division world champion James “Lights Out” Toney (76-10-3, 46 KOs) will face “Lightning” Mike Sheppard (24-20-2, 10 KOs) on May 13 at the Convocation Center of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. At-stake will be something called the World Boxing Foundation (WBF) world heavyweight title.
At 48, the fight will serve as Toney's first since his loss to Charles Ellis (then 9-3-1) in August 2015.
The loss to the obscure Eliis was James' third in five fights, each delivered by opponents far below contender level at the time.
Lucas Browne (then 15-0, 14 KOs) soundly defeated James Toney in April 2013 in what many believed would be the latter's swan song. James also dropped a less consequential three-rounder to journeyman Jason Gavern months later in the UK's famed Prizefighter Tournament.
Some fans have been calling for Toney's retirement for years, insisting he might have brain damage due to his presumed slurred speech and deteriorating reflexes.
Let's hope this will be the legend's last bout.
