So when is the actual fight time for the main event, Marquez vs Bradley?
Well, it depends on how long the four undercard bouts last. Expect the main event to start anywhere between 10:45 PM ET and 11:45 PM ET. (10:45 AM and 11:45 AM Sunday in Manila)
Both Bradley and Marquez have scored wins over one of boxing's legendary fighters but with vastly different outcomes.
Bradley won the WBO championship by way of a highly controversial split decision over Manny Pacquiao June of 2012. The Pacquiao vs Bradley decision was so controversial, in fact, Bradley received a lot of personal abuse from fans.
Marquez also fought Pacquiao in 2012 but with a different outcome, thanks to a vicious counter right hand that knocked Pacquiao out cold.
Juan Manuel Marquez is a seven time world champion over four weight divisions and a true legend of the sport. And at the age of 40, Father Time doesn't appear to have caught up with the Mexican as he continues to showcase vintage displays of pugilistic greatness.
Fight pursesJuan Manuel Marquez - $6,000,000 (minimum)
Timothy Bradley - $4,100,000
Orlando Salido - $100,000
Orlando Cruz - $65,000
In his 20 year career, Juan Manuel Marquez has etched wins over Manuel Medina, Derrick "Smoke" Gainer, Marco Antonio Barrera, Rocky Juarez, Orlando Salido, Joel Casamayor, Juan Diaz (twice) and finally Manny Pacquiao, following two loses and a draw to the Filipino.
Marquez also fought but came up short against undefeated world champions Chris John and Floyd Mayweather Jr. This shows the caliber of fighter that Marquez is and with all his experience he will be a very tough opponent for Bradley.
Timothy Bradley will be going into this fight with an impressive resume of his own, having scored wins over Kendall Holt, Lamont Peterson, Devon Alexander, Joel Casamayor and Manny Pacquiao. He is a quality, top level fighter and very qualified to be stepping in the ring with Juan Manuel Marquez.
Styles make fights
Juan Manuel Marquez
The styles of these fighters will make for an intriguing battle. Marquez is your typical tough Mexican fighter who will do whatever it takes to win, and is as good of a counter puncher there is. And as he's shown in recent fights, he can brawl too and has knockout power in both hands, especially the right.
Marquez has shown that he can end a fight in dramatic fashion with just one punch. He is also sound defensively and can absorb a lot of good, hard shots. When the going gets tough, he gets tougher.
Feeling the need to prove his many doubters following his highly controversial fight against Manny Pacquiao, Tim Bradley stood toe-to-toe with the rugged, hard-hitting Ruslan Provodnikov in March. Bradley showcased the biggest display of aggression in his career, trading shots with the stronger Russian.
While the fight made for great viewing, it was not the right tactic for Bradley and he absorbed far too many unnecessary punches. Aside from jeopardizing the fight, he could have sustained permanent brain damage if, in fact, it hasn't already happened.
The trauma Bradley took to his head after the Provodnikov fight was compared to that of a stroke victim. After his brutal war with Provodnikov, which Tim won via a close but unanimous decision, Bradley suffered headaches and slurred speech for several weeks.
Bradley's trainer, Joel Diaz, acknowledged he was worried about Bradley after that fight. As a result, trainer Diaz decided to test his fighter by arranging for Bradley to spar with knockout artist Lucas Matthysse in his very first sparring session at training camp. The result proved to Diaz and Bradley that Tim had recovered quite well since the Provodnikov fight; enough to be ready for the legendary Juan Manuel Marquez.
Bradley has never been a big brawler. He's a tough, slick accurate puncher with a good defense and is more of a pure boxer than slugger; He's best when he's on the outside, picking his spots. His fine skills got him where he is today. However, Bradley won't be able to outclass Marquez from a technical standpoint the way he did with Provodnikov.
Marquez vs Bradley Prediction
Look for Marquez to take the fight to Bradley early; if JMM can draw Bradley in early to a slugfest, he can stop Bradley within six. I'm not predicting an easy night for either fighter. Expect a tough, all-out war as it has Fight of the Year potential.
In the end, Juan Manuel Marquez will be too strong, too experienced and too accurate for Tim.
Marquez by mid to late round TKO.
