Kovalev vs Alvarez 2: Date, location, semi-preview

Yes, former light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (32-3-1, 28 KO) will apparently exercise the rematch clause stipulated as part of Kovalev vs Alvarez which took place three weeks ago.

In that bout, Eleider Alvarez (24-0, 12 KO) shockingly KO'd Sergey, lifting the IBF and WBO titles.|

Many in boxing assumed the latter, at 35, was done and would forego the rematch option.... Not so fast.

Kovalev's manager, Egis Klimas, recently told ESPN:

"Yes, he wants to have the rematch. There's no other fight that he wants and there is no fight as big for him as the rematch."

Fact: Fighters as successful and menacing as Sergey Kovalev don't go away that easily. Of course he's fighting on the big stage again.

Whether Kovalev is still the "Krusher" remains to be seen; but, in his defense, he was making a fine account of himself and winning the fight prior to the round he was stopped in.

Kovalev vs Alvarez 2 date and rematch clause policy: The rematch must happen by February 2019 and Team Kovalev must notify Alvarez and Co. of its intent to exercise the rematch clause within 60 days of the fight one (by October 4).

Kovalev vs. Alvarez 2 location: At this moment, we don't know where it'll take place. Their first bout was in Atlantic City in front of a pro Kovalev crowd. Look for the rematch to happen there or Madison Square Garden.

Mini-preview
Kovalev, when he wants to be, is an excellent hit-and-move boxer. Given he was outboxing Alvarez the first 6 rounds of their bout, look for Kovalev to use his superior technical skills, especially his educated left jab, and try to box Alvarez from a distance.

Kovalev is deficient on the inside and Alvarez is strong and tough. Remember how Alvarez weathered the storm in Round 4 and just kept coming? Alvarez can't risk trading shots with the Colombian.

While we may see a few glimpses of the Krusher, expect to see Kovalev "the boxer" try to win on points or soften up his opponent en route to a late stoppage.

Of course, implementing that strategy for 12 rounds against Alvarez is easier said than done. Alvarez knows he can KO Kovalev and will be even more confident in the rematch as a result.

Look for Alvarez to attempt to lure Kovalev into a brawl or to fighting on the inside or at mid-range. The champion will want to close the distance, and the closer he gets to Kovalev the better his chances are of winning.

If Kovalev vs. Alvarez 2 goes the full twelve, the outcome will heavily favor Kovalev unless he gets hurt early. Alvarez, on the otherhand, will likely need another knockout or several knockdowns to win on points.

This is a 50-50 fight.
