Kovalev vs Pascal 2: Purses an Enigma?Hot
Big-time boxing returns to Montreal tonight as unified light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev defends his titles against former lineal champion Jean Pascal in a rematch of their March 2015 meeting.
So how much are the combatants making tonight?
Unfortunately, we can only surmise at this moment.
Kovalev earned $500,000, not including any possible deals with Russian television, in his Fall 2014 win over legend Bernard Hopkins who pocketed a $1 Million purse in addition to Golden Boy royalties (Hopkins is a part owner of Golden Boy Promotions, the main promoter of the event).
For his title defense win over relative unknown Mohammedi last summer, which was also televised on HBO, Kovalev, the overwhelming A-side fighter, earned $750,000 (plus additional money from Russian television) while the challenger earned a respectable $270,000.
Tonight, we can conservatively assume Sergey Kovalev will earn at least in the neighborhood of 1.5 M (not including Russian television) while Pascal upwards of 1M. In fact, Pascal, who has bitter feelings towards Kovalev, recently hinted the Russian earned at least a cool million in their bout 10 months ago.
"He likes to go to other people's backyard because he has no hometown of his own and couldn't sell 2,000 tickets to save his life. And when he makes his first million-dollar purse because of my great fans in Montreal, how does he thank them? He gives them the finger. Talk about classless," Pascal told ESPN.
Given he prevailed in their first bout and his stock in boxing is sky high, the red hot Kovalev will likely earn well north of $1 Million tonight.
