Manny Pacquiao - Juan Manuel Marquez Doubleheader in April?

For years boxing fans have called for Top Rank to strengthen their undercards. Do they finally have the answer? According to the Manila Bulletin, Top Rank President Bob Arum hinted he was contemplating a fight card on April 20 that may feature Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez in separate bouts.

Arum said it may serve as a preview for the big event planned for September which would showcase the 5th and final showdown between the two legends.

Perhaps this idea is the answer to rivals Floyd Mayweather and Golden Boy Promotions whose last major PPV last event took place in May of 2012. Floyd Mayweather defeated Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez earned a points win over Shane Mosley.

So, if the Manny Pacquiao - Juan Manuel Marquez Doubleheader happens, who could be some possible opponents?

For Manny Pacquiao, two fights make all the sense in the world. One would be a rematch against Timothy Bradley. Of course in their previous battle Bradley won the controversial split-decision that still confuses fans to this day.

The other matchup would be against rising star Brandon Rios. As of right now, Rios is currently on tap for a March rematch of the 2012 Fight of the Year against Denver's Mike Alvarado. But in boxing, things can obviously change.

Outside those two matchups, there's nothing really out there for PacMan. And as of right now, there has been no resolution to the Golden Boy-Top Rank rift, so unfortunately a lot of good fights are just not possible at the moment.

Juan Manuel Marquez shares the same range of opponents. He could fight Rios if Pacquiao fights Bradley or he could fight Bradley if Pacquiao takes on Rios. There's not really any definitive opponents under the Top Rank umbrella for either Pacquiao or Marquez unless Mike Jones or Jessie Vargas suddenly entered the picture.

If this is indeed a preview to a September showdown between Pacquiao and Marquez, as Arum suggested, what if one of the fighters were to lose? It seems like a risky venture for Top Rank and Co.

Although the idea seems possible, there are still some barriers into this getting done. For one, Juan Manuel Marquez has not shown any indications he'll even fight again. The other issue is Pacquiao is currently suspended 120 days by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and cannot compete in physical contact for 90 days.

Even with the barriers, it's exciting to learn Top Rank is flirting with the idea of a Manny Pacquiao - Juan Manuel Marquez Doubleheader. But will it be enough to sell the fans?

GBP and Mayweather's event sold 1.5 million PPV buys. Can this proposal come close?
