Manny Pacquiao projected to face Errol Spence Jr. in Welterweight unificationHot
Most boxing fans who frequent popular news sites already understand that current WBA Welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao has created somewhat of a scheduling log-jam among the top-rated fighters of the 147-pound weight division. Because a fight with the Pacman remains the biggest payday for any competing Welterweight fighter, most of the division's best have been waiting to hear who Senator Pacquiao will choose as his first "dance partner" for 2020 before committing to any other offers.
So who will be facing the sport's only eight-division world champion later this year?
And the winner is...
WBC/IBF Welterweight Champion Errol Spence Jr.
Although nothing official has been announced at the time of publication, sources insist that a deal is imminent for a massive 147-pound unification bout between Manny Pacquiao and Errol Spence Jr. to take place in June of 2020.
Top candidates to host the highly anticipated event are AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Like most fans of the Heavyweight division, interested observers of the talent enriched 147-pound weight class hope to see title unification in 2020, and a fight between Spence and Pacquiao would be the biggest Welterweight match-up since May/Pac in 2015. And because of the risk-taking mentality of both men, a style match-up between Pacquiao and Spence would prove to be a much more entertaining endeavor for the real bosses of boxing; the paying customers.
After proving his championship mettle in featured bouts with Kell Brook, Lamont Peterson, Mikey Garcia, and Shawn Porter, the 30-year-old Texas-based fighter was once viewed as being too young, too strong and too proficient for the 41-year-old Pacman. But after suffering a potentially career-altering automobile accident in October of 2019, many critics believe it could be the best time to catch Errol Spence Jr. in a competitive 12 round affair.
Despite receiving medical clearance to compete in the professional ring, Errol Spence Jr. has much to prove as to whether or not he's still "The Truth" against the other top-rated fighters of the Welterweight division. Although WBO titlist Terence Crawford is considered to be the 2nd best fighter of the packed 147-pound division, a fight with the current WBA Super champ is no tune-up.
Errol had better be at 100% if he hopes to get a career-defining victory over the Pacman in June.
Pacquiao showed in his title-winning effort against former champion Keith "One Time" Thurman that he still has the ability to compete at the highest level of the sport, earning an impressive split-decision victory over the previously undefeated titleholder.
In the aforementioned championship bout, Manny floored Thurman in the opening stanza and showed his versatility as a fighter throughout the entire 12 round contest; consistently switching roles as aggressive minded puncher to defensively fluid boxer within every round of the title bout.
So how would Pacquiao fair against Errol Spence Jr.? What would the betting line for Spence vs. Pacquiao be after the official announcement of the unification bout?
More than likely, Spence would still be favored over the Filipino icon, despite the uncertainty of his physical health.
Expect most betting lines to open with Errol Spence Jr. listed as a 3 to 1 (-300) betting favorite with Manny Pacquiao being a very live 2 to 1 (+200) betting underdog. Although "The Truth" would be a clear favorite heading into the contest, many critics and fans would be curious to see how Spence reacts to the speed and versatility of the legendary Pacman.
