Manny Pacquiao vs Adrien Broner: Easily one of the biggest fights in boxing

Tonight, the flashy Adrien 'AB' Broner (32-2, 22 KO) faces Adrian Granados (18-4-2, 12 KO) in a bout that will be broadcast on Showtime and BoxNation.

Should Broner win in spectacular fashion, what's the likelihood of him facing all-time great Manny Pacquiao in November (should PacMan defeat Jeff Horn in April)?

Keep in mind, Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, tried to make the fight a reality last summer. If Arum had his way, Pacquiao vs Jessie Vargas would have been Pacquiao vs Broner.

"I was dealing with Al Haymon on making that fight (Pacquiao vs. Broner at 147 pounds)," Arum told BoxingScene.com last year. "Al tried but Broner was asking for crazy money that nobody can afford, so he is out and Manny is looking for another opponent."

According to AB, the $4 million offer made by Top Rank, Inc. and Manny Pacquiao was mere "chump change", which is ultimately why the fight wasn't made.

"F*** Bob Arum," Adrien Broner wrote on his "Instagram" account. "Pay me what I deserve, B***H!! You been trying to sign me ANYWAY LAME."

Having been out of the ring a year and with no big fights on the horizon, perhaps Adrien will change his mind if the offer is made again?

Where else can Broner generate $4 Million? And sans Floyd Mayweather, what other possible opponent can give Adrien the limelight he desires?

Pacquiao vs Broner would be huge; It would be, from a marketability and revenue standpoint, far bigger than Pacquiao vs Terence Crawford, Errol Spence, Kell Brook, Keith Thurman or Danny Garcia even though all of them would be favored over Adrien.

What sets Broner apart is his star power. Sans Manny, he's more popular and marketable than all of the aforementioned fighters and has the personality and flamboyance to generate tremendous buzz. It would pique the interest of casual fans.

... Moreover, what two fighters' personas clash any more than Manny and Broner's?

Adrien is flashy, divisive, controversial and arrogant while Manny is soft spoken and humble. Pacquiao vs Broner would showcase the old pro vs the emerging star.... the good guy vs bad guy.

Like pro wrestling, a boxing match is always more interesting to the masses when the combatants are well-known and colorful. And if the public perceives that match-up as 'good guy vs bad guy,' it's even better.

In fact, it was former heavyweight champion Sonny Liston who famously said:

"A boxing match is like a cowboy movie. There's got to be good guys and there's got to be bad guys. And that's what people pay for - to see the bad guys get beat... But in my cowboy movie, the bad guy always wins."

Pacquiao vs Broner would be bigger than Canelo Alvarez vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in May. Would it be bigger than April’s heavyweight superfight between Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua?

Answer: In America, definitely. On the international level, possibly.

Risk vs Reward

The risk vs reward factor is, or at least should be, attractive to both fighters. Manny Pacquiao stands to generate more income from fighting Adrien Broner, a fella who would be presumably easier to beat than Crawford, Thurman, Spence or Brook.

"He's okay, but I don't think he's quite in the Pacquiao league at this point," Manny's trainer, Freddie Roach, told FightHub TV late last summer.

And if you're Adrien Broner, fighting Pacquiao gives you the opportunity to be a star on a whole new level. Furthermore, given PacMan is 38 and has serious senatorial obligations, a 27 year old talent like Broner must certainly like his chances.

You can't throw two guys in the ring and say, "Fight!" Even when it makes perfect 'boxing' sense, it may not make 'business' sense.

Pacquiao vs Broner is good 'boxing' sense and 'business' sense.

There's no reason Pacquiao vs Broner shouldn't happen unless Adrien is convinced it's a fight he can't win at this moment.

Boxing needs match-ups like this one.
