Manny Pacquiao: Will he adopt Golovkin’s ‘Mexican Style’ against Mayweather?
On Wednesday, March 18, it was reported that eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao was visited by current WBA,IBO, and WBA Middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin at Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach’s Wildcard Gym in Hollywood, California.
While promoting his May 16 showdown with talented southpaw Willie Monroe Jr. in Los Angeles, the fighter most affectionately known as “Triple G” stopped by to wish the Pacman “good luck” on his May 2 bout with the best pound for pound fighter on the planet, Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Although the visit was perceived to be an impromptu appearance, was Golovkin’s arrival more than just a spontaneous trip to Pacquiao’s training camp?
While most will undoubtedly dismiss this meeting as a mere showing of good sportsmanship, Freddie Roach has been recorded complimenting Golovkin’s masterful technique in cutting off the ring and closing the distance more effectively than anyone else in the sport today.
Is it also a mere coincidence that the seven-time trainer of the year has admitted his superstar fighter needs improvement in this area?
Was Gennady’s council actually beckoned by the knowledgeable fight trainer on March 18?
Will Pacquiao attempt to incorporate Golovkin’s “Mexican Style” to better control range against the always crafty Floyd Mayweather on May 2?
The Kazakh mauler was taught this technique by elite level trainer Abel Sanchez of Big Bear Lake, California. The fight style is a complex method in which a fighter will cut off the ring before attempting to close the distance between him and his opposition. Once the aggressive fighter strategically diminishes the reaction time of his adversary, the fighter implementing this technique will begin to work at short range with short, compact hooks and uppercuts to the body and head.
Although Mayweather is very proficient at defending himself in the pocket, the fighters who have had the most success against the defensive master throughout his seventeen year professional career have been pugilists who can cut off the ring, close the distance, and work in very close quarters effectively.
But will six weeks be enough time for “The Mexicutioner” to master Golovkin’s “Mexican Style” of in-fighting?
Fight fans will see the dramatic conclusion on May 2!!
