Mayweather vs Pacquiao rematch? What are the chances?
Rumors abound as they relate to a rematch clause for Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao on May 2.
With all of the money Mayweather vs Pacquiao stands to generate, there must be a rematch clause, right?
At this moment, it appears there is no such agreement for Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2.
Given time was running out to solidify a May 2 showdown, it's certainly understandable those involved in negotiations may have chosen to solely focus on the task at-hand.
Should there have been a rematch clause?
Answer: Probably not
Lucrative, high-profile superfights are typically born of public demand and, as was the case in Mayweather vs Canelo Alvarez in 2013, the masses may not clamor for a rematch, especially if the fight a) lacks action or b) is one-sided. Nevertheless, the fighters are such titans, a rematch would still generate a fair amount of interest if May's bout falls short of expectations.
Reasons fans would want a rematch
1. The bout is exciting and very competitive, regardless of the winner
2. Controversial decision; Many dispute the judges' verdict
3. Controversial stoppage: The referee's decision to stop the bout is unpopular
4. Technical decision: A fighter is injured due to an infraction and cannot continue (ex: bloody eye caused by an unintentional headbutt)
5. The fight is a draw
Of course, due to the fighters' statuses, there still may be a demand for a rematch even after a one-sided affair.
Although Evander Holyfield dominated Mike Tyson in their first showdown, their rematch was far bigger. And despite the fact Tyson was wasted by Buster Douglas six years prior, no fan alive would have passed up an immediate sequel.
Should Floyd, the favorite, win decisively, don't expect the public to want a return bout. However, if Manny hands Floyd his first defeat, don't be surprised if the fans (a la Holyfield vs Tyson) insist they want to see Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2 (Actually, it would likely be billed Pacquiao vs Mayweather 2).
As was the case in Holyfield vs Tyson, many may be in disbelief if the favorite losses and insist a return bout is necessary while others will ask themselves, "Can Manny do it again?"
Have Manny and Floyd engaged in rematches before?
After close calls against Jose Luis Castillo and Marcos Maidana, in 2002 and 2014 respectively, Floyd gave both opponents immediate rematches and won all four encounters.
Manny Pacquiao, most notably to date, has engaged in four historic bouts with fight legend Juan Manual Marquez and is 2-1-1 against the Mexican. They fought in 2004 (Draw 10), 2008 (Pacquiao SD 12), 2011 (Pacquiao MD 12) and 2012 (Marquez KO 6).
He defeated Marco Antonio Barrera twice, in 2003 (Pacquiao TKO 11) and 2007 (Pacquiao UD 12), and Erik Morales three times, once in 2005 (Morales UD 12) and twice in 2006 (Pacquiao TKO 10, KO 3).
Pac-Man also fought Tim Bradley twice. He dropped a controversial split decision in 2012 and won unanimously two years later.
Will the rivals meet again after May?
In the end, fans will decide.
