Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2015: Canelo vs Kirkland puts added pressure on big fight

Lee Cleveland Updated February 13, 2019
Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya has severely limited Floyd Mayweather's fight options on Cinco de Mayo Weekend, more specifically May 2. Perhaps the hottest date real estate in boxing, Cinco de Mayo Saturday has been on lockdown by Floyd for the last several years.

Will 'Cinco de May...weather' be in full effect once again in 2015?

If Team Mayweather opts to face someone other than Manny Pacquiao on May 2, Floyd faces the possibility of getting whooped, or at least severely dimimished, on his own coveted weekend.

Win or lose inside the ring, he may face his stiffest competition outside of it.

Golden Boy Promotions is proceeding "full steam" with plans to stage "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) vs. James Kirkland (32-1, 28KOs) on May 2, free on HBO.

Should Floyd vs Manny be confirmed for the same day, De La Hoya has promised to reschedule Canelo's return for May 9.

It's a brilliant idea because Mayweather versus Cotto (or anyone else sans Pacquiao) at $60/$70 a pop would undoubtedly face tremendous turbulence going head-to-head with Canelo vs Kirkland on HBO.

The overwhelming majority of fans prefer to see Mayweather face Pacquiao anyway, and now the masses have an exciting alternative on Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Simply put, Floyd must fight Manny on May 2 or surrender 'Cinco de Mayweather' to Mexican rival Canelo Alvarez.

Floyd is a much bigger draw than Canelo but given the circumstances, including the fighters' respective platforms and the date,  the overall sentiment and business particulars suggest the 24 year old redead is capable of ruining Cinco De Mayo for boxing's top star.

Don't underestimate
Canelo vs Kirkland will be broadcast on the biggest stage in boxing, HBO, and will be one of the most-anticipated matches of 2015. It would be foolish for Team Mayweather to attempt to go head-to-head with such a sizzling, free match-up.

... The keyword is "free."

How big is Canelo vs Kirkland? Promoters are anticipating 65,000 on-hand at San Antonio's Alamo.

If Mayweather vs Pacquiao happens on May 2, 2015, perhaps we can thank Oscar De La Hoya for 'forcing the hand' of its coordinators.
