Mayweather vs Pacquiao bets: Freddie Roach and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith wager $1500 pair of ‘Tom Ford’ shoesHot
On Wednesday, April 29, Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach made an impromptu appearance on Stephen A. Smith’s Sirius/XM Radio talk show, promoting this Saturday night’s historic showdown between his fighter, Manny Pacquiao, and recognized pound for pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
While on the air, the customary ESPN analyst made an extremely bold Mayweather vs Pacquiao prediction on the eventual outcome of the highly anticipated May 2 match-up, and directed the prognostication to the often outspoken seven-time Trainer of the Year.
“I’m picking your guy to lose by TKO in the eleventh round, Freddie,” stated Smith.
While taking an obvious exception to the audacious comment, the renowned boxing coach not only made his official “Mayweather/Pacquiao” prediction live on the air, but also countered with a friendly wager.
Apprently, Freddie is so confident his fighter will indeed stage a shocking, ninth round TKO victory over his undefeated opponent, that he’s willing to bet a pricey pair of “Tom Ford” men’s shoes.
“You know, Freddie, I don’t bet…but I’m taking you up on that bet,” claimed the boisterous sports commentator. “Tom Ford shoes? Is that what you said?”
“Yes,” confirmed the Wildcard Gym owner.
“I can’t believe you just said this,” stated the astounded Stephen A. Smith. “One of us is going to have to buy a pair of Tom Ford shoes! A knock-out over Floyd Mayweather in the ninth round?”
“Yes,” verified Freddie Roach.
“Oh…I’m taking that bet,” declared the popular media personality. “I don’t usually bet, but I’m taking this from Freddie Roach!”
What exactly did Freddie and Stephen wager?
A single pair of leather penny loafers crafted by the celebrated American designer, Tom Ford, will often run a consumer $1500 at most high-end retail outlets. The popular brand’s line of sneakers start at whopping $790.
Smith was admittedly surprised by the bet.
“I was shocked,” stated Stephen A. on this morning’s episode of ESPN’s “First Take”. “Forgive me for saying this…Freddie is a fabulous trainer and he’s a Hall of Famer. Being heralded for his knowledge of the fight game is understandable…but he will never, ever be applauded for his wardrobe.”
“So the fact that he came up with the ‘Tom Ford’ shoes wager genuinely threw me for a loop and shocked me. Obviously he wants to upgrade in that department, and I applaud him for that. But to use this as a maneuver to pull that off? I find it very, very shocking and a bit revealing.”
“The level of disrespect that Freddie has engaged in throughout this entire promotion, it comes across as a bit desperate to me. I think he’s more than a bit worried about this fight and his words could be interpreted as an act of desperation.”
Is Freddie Roach genuinely worried about his fighter’s chances on May 2?
According to the Hall of Fame trainer, it’s Manny’s opponent who’s worried.
"I’m wondering if Mayweather is even going to show up on May 2,” Roach stated to several media members before Wednesday’s final press conference at the MGM Grand.
“He’s been very subdued and low-key. I don’t think any fighter is afraid, but I really think Floyd was forced into a fight he didn’t want to take. He didn’t have the luxury of picking this opponent like he usually does."
“I’m 100% confident that Manny is going to hand Mayweather his first loss as a professional.”
The truth will be revealed in just a few days!!
