Mayweather vs Pacquiao: Controversial decision just waiting to happen?Hot
Some oddmakers have lineal/ RING Magazine welterweight and super welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather as high as a 3 to 1 favorite to defeat Manny Pacquiao.
And after assessing both fighters on paper, the right man is the favorite. However, isn't 3 to 1 a bit steep?
A true expert would wait until the judges are announced before wagering heavily on this fight because Mayweather vs Pacquiao has c-o-n-t-r-o-v-e-r-s-y written all over it.
Remember Sugar Ray Leonard vs Marvin Hagler? Like Floyd, Marvin was a 3 to 1 favorite.
Should it come to fruition, Mayweather vs Pacquiao may very well be 'Leonard vs Hagler' all over again.
For the last 28 years, fans have debated with each other incessantly over the decision (Leonard SD 12) which remains one of the biggest controversies in professional sports.
Moreover, very few insist it was a draw as the high majority feel one or the other clearly won the fight.
Those who favor Sugar Ray (like me) believed he outboxed the Marvelous One, and according to HBO Punchstats, the Sugar Man bested Hagler in total punches landed (306-291) and in powershots. He was far more accurate offensively and, defensively, used superior movement to seemingly frustrate the middleweight legend who seemed to have difficulty finding the target.
But proponents for Hagler will insist their man was an effective aggressor, had Ray retreating all night and was more active than his opponent. Although Leonard landed 15 more shots, Marvin registered 163 more punches.
Moreover, Marvin's backers will say the Marvelous One, who was never in any danger, looked to have Ray hurt on several occasions, and that Hagler's power punches were more impactful despite the fact he appeared to land fewer of them.
The rivalry between Mayweather and Pacquiao fans is already intense - Can you imagine if the presumed upcoming superfight is anything like Leonard vs Hagler?
The level of debate and conspiracy theories would reach immense proportions.
Are we headed for another controversy in Mayweater vs Pacquiao?
Conventional wisdom says Pacquiao, like Hagler against Leonard, would be the aggressor and would unleash far more punches than Floyd. But Floyd is likely to be more accurate and land more eye-catching shots a la Sugar Ray Leonard in his title-taking bout against Hagler.
And like Ray Leonard, one can envision PacMan fighting in controlled bursts while Floyd, like Hagler, would likely mainstain a consistent, more measured pace.
Floyd's presumed ability to make Manny whiff and potshot his smaller foe on occasion would draw more 'ooohs' from those watching, while Pacquiao's thudding shots, even when landing on Floyd's gloves, would appear harder and more impactful.
The winner may very well be determined by what style two of the three judges favor as it's easy to conceive either man winning or losing a close decision.
Mayweather vs Pacquiao...Is there already an impending controversy brewing.
