On his personal Instagram account, Floyd Mayweather Jr. posted a short video of himself working out with an old-school training regimen, which has become synonymous with boxing.

The attached featurette shows the “Money Man” of boxing chopping wood in the early morning hours.

What are the benefits of chopping wood in preparing for a prizefight?

To help fight fans understand the benefits of the unorthodox practice, Heavyweight great Earnie Shavers discusses the importance of chopping wood while preparing for a big fight in his critically acclaimed autobiography.

“One of the ways Archie Moore got me ready for a big fight was to have me chop a lot of wood."

"He said, ‘This will help tone your body and help you to increase your punching power.’ Archie was right on the money. Chopping firewood helped strengthen my wrists and gave me that extra snap when I delivered a punch. By my own estimation, I believe it increased my punching power by at least 25 percent.”

Floyd obviously recognizes the residual payback of chopping wood while preparing for a big fight. But is Floyd specifically trying to increase strength for his big date with Manny Pacquiao?

Does Mayweather genuinely believe his power will be a big factor on May 2?

We’ll find out in less than two months.
