On Tuesday, February 17, Top Rank hosted a media workout at trainer Freddie Roach’s Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles for Zou Shiming’s first world title opportunity against incumbent IBF Flyweight champ Amnat Ruenroeng on March 7.

And although the press event was staged to promote Zou's big date on HBO 2, the topic du jour was understandably Manny vs. Floyd.

The world renowned fight coach is admittedly expecting Pacquiao’s eventual arrival to the “City of the Angels”.

“I feel that the fight is going to happen, so I’m preparing for Pacquiao to come,” states the Hall of Fame fight trainer.

“Floyd’s been talking about it, which is very unusual, he obviously wants the fight, Arum wants the fight, I want the fight, Manny wants the fight, and Les Moonves…he wants the fight more than all of us.”

“A lot of good names want this fight. And usually when these guys want a fight, they get it.”

While Freddie, as well as most boxing pundits, recognize Floyd to be the best pound for pound fighter on the planet, the astute fight mentor does feel Manny’s next opponent may have lost a step recently.

“I’ve done a little bit of research on Floyd, and I’ve done a little bit of research on sparring partners. The Floyd that I watched five years ago is a little different from Floyd today. So I’ve been watching his most recent fights.”

“He still doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, but he has a couple of flaws. With Manny’s southpaw stance, it might help him in some ways or it might hurt him in some ways. It’s going to be a very tactical fight.”

“But I have to come up with a perfect gameplan for this one. This is going to be the biggest challenge ever, and I like challenges. I think my guy can pull it off, but it won’t be easy.”

Despite being supremely confident the biggest fight in boxing will be announced very soon, Coach Freddie genuinely doesn’t know what’s holding up the inevitable declaration.

“I honestly don’t know what’s holding it up,” admits the six-time trainer of the year. “I wish I were more on the inside. I’m just the trainer. I talked to Michael Koncz about it, and he says it’s taking place. I don‘t think he has any reason to lie to me.”
