Mayweather vs Pacquiao: Why was Floyd so fixated on May 2?

Many underestimate the strategy involved in boxing..... outside the ring.

During the Mayweather vs Pacquiao negotiations, one condition of Floyd's was the fight be held on May 2, Cinco de Mayo Weekend.

Because Mayweather vs Pacquiao is an event of immense proportions and would require far more coordination and logistics work than the typical PPV card, Top Rank founder Bob Arum as well as the two main networks involved, HBO and Showtime, allegedly lobbied for a later date.

But Floyd was hell-bent on May 2?

Why?

Why is the biggest fight in boxing history taking place a mere 9 1/2 weeks after it was announced?

Most superfights take place at least 3 or 4 months after negotiations have been finalized.

Either Floyd Mayweather a) is superstitious about fighting on Cinco de Mayo, which he affectionately refers to as 'Cinco de Mayweather' or b) thinks fighting on May 2 will give him some sort of advantage.

After Sugar Ray Leonard was upset by Roberto Duran in 1980, a few weeks passed before the former's team suggested the rematch be held as soon as possible.

Why?

Strategy perhaps.

Allegedly, Leonard & Co. were aware of Duran's partying and astounding weight gains between fights and didn't want to allow Roberto ample time into shape. As a result, the rematch was scheduled to take place 5 months after the first bout and not long after negotiations completed. As expected, Duran had trouble making weight and eventually quit in Round 7.

After the fight, Duran blamed his management team, telling the press, "They should have guided me and protected me for that fight. They didn't. They sent me in without giving me enough time to get ready."

Regardless of what really transpired in the Leonard vs Duran 2 negotiations, fighters and promoters will often exercise strategies outside the ring, such as using the date as an element of warfare, hoping it will they will give their fighter an edge in the fight.

Manny has never had problems making the welterweight limit so what benefit would Floyd gain by fighting on May 2 as opposed to May 6, May 30 or June 6?

He definitely believes May 2 will work to his advantage... Why?

Can you think of any reasons?
